PTW partnership feature: Metlakatla First Nation and Lax Kw’alaams Band

Initiated in 2014, PTW’s partnership with Coast Tsimshian Enterprises (“CTE”) is gaining traction in fostering sustainable development and economic growth within the traditional territories of the CTE Indigenous communities. As an example, in 2022, CTE and PTW collaborated to expand the shore power service at the Port of Prince Rupert. This is a significant project that not only aims to expand the port’s power but also includes carbon emission initiatives that upon completion, is expected to offset almost 30,000 tones of carbon emissions annually in addition to offsetting air emissions from vessel exhaust, improving air quality.

Located on the northwest coast of B.C. near Prince Rupert, CTE is a 100 percent Indigenous owned collaboration between Metlakatla First Nation and Lax Kw’alaams Band and together, this collaboration undertakes projects conducted in a manner that ensures environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

CTE has recently established the Lax Kw’alaams tug boat and barge partnership, CT Marine Ltd. This is the first and only First Nations led tug and barge company on the coast of British Columbia and includes two large tug boats, two large ramp barges and several other dozer boats.
