PTW’s Construction Workforce Completes Electrical and Instrumentation Upgrades for Pipeline Integration Near Conklin, AB

PTW’s Construction team recently completed a two-month project near Conklin, Alberta, supporting a major facility upgrade to enable the first-time pipeline shipment of diluted bitumen (dilbit). This marks a significant milestone for the site, as it transitions from trucking to pipeline transport, increasing efficiency and reducing logistics complexity.

The scope of our work included the installation of new Motor Control Center (MCC) sections with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to power upgraded sales oil pump motors. PTW supplied, installed, and terminated all associated power and control cabling for the new pumps, additional dilbit aerial coolers, instrumentation systems, lighting, and electric heat tracing (EHT). The team also completed installation and termination of a new fibre optic trunk line connecting the central facility to the newly built LACT station, enabling full automation and system integration.

Commissioning activities involved setup, calibration, and verification of all electrical and instrumentation systems to bring the new infrastructure online safely and efficiently. The successful completion of this work enables the facility to ship oil via pipeline for the first time.

PTW’s Construction workforce delivered this project with a compact, skilled team, meeting schedule requirements and quality standards. The project highlights PTW’s ability to execute complex facility upgrades and support critical operational transitions across Canada’s energy sector.
