Burner & Controls Upgrade

Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada

Overview

PTW was contracted by a leading oil and gas producer to upgrade their natural draft utility process heater, including burner internals and controls. The original burner equipment was operating on a high excess air volume resulting in low combustion efficiency. The existing vessel required certain upgrades to be compliant with CSA B149.3 standards.
The flame arrestor housings (FAH) did not allow adequate access to the burner internals for maintenance without being removed. The process temperature of 250 degrees Celsius was the maximum the burners could sustain. The newly installed combustion safety controller provides a range of outputs that ties into the current PLC with remote start capabilities.
By installing high efficiency burner internals, the temperature is now maintained at 272 degrees Celsius. The upgrades to the system resulted in increased efficiency, reliability, safety compliance and cost savings of the existing field equipment while conforming to the CSA standards.
